The Punjab government has announced a sweeping policy shift by banning the purchase of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles for all provincial departments, in a move aimed at encouraging cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
Under the new directive, government bodies will only be allowed to procure electric or hybrid vehicles. However, an exception has been made for vehicles required for field operations, which will not fall under this restriction.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held in Lahore, where Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the initiative reflects Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision of transforming Punjab into a greener and more environmentally responsible province.
In a related development, the Punjab Chief Secretary stated that the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new petrol pumps will now be linked to the installation of electric vehicle charging facilities. This step is intended to support the growing shift towards electric mobility across the province.
The move marks a significant push by the Punjab government to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly alternatives in the public sector.
