Lawmakers Urge Action Against ‘Unsupervised’ Use of Social Media By Children

A notice was raised in the Senate over the excessive and unsupervised use of social media applications by young children.

The attention notice was moved by Senator Falak Naz, drawing attention to concerns about the growing exposure of minors to digital platforms without adequate monitoring.

Responding to the notice, Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told the House that the issue was of critical importance and warranted discussion at the national level. He said the matter had wide-ranging social implications and required a coordinated approach involving multiple stakeholders.

Presiding Officer Sherry Rehman described the issue as highly sensitive and said it could not be referred solely to the IT committee as several ministries were involved. She said that on the direction of the Chairman of the Senate, a special committee should be formed to examine the matter, with input also to be sought from the Ministry of Law.
