Punjab University Removes Senior Official Over Alleged Illegal Tree Cutting

Punjab University (PU) on Wednesday removed the director of the Shaikh Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC) following allegations of illegal tree cutting on the campus.

According to an official notification issued by the university registrar, Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, in his capacity as chairman of the SZIC Board of Governors, relieved Prof Dr Muhammad Abdullah of his duties with immediate effect.

The decision was taken amid serious concerns over the unlawful cutting of trees at the centre. The vice chancellor appointed Prof. Dr. Samina Saadia as the acting director of SZIC as a temporary arrangement.

A university spokesperson said Prof Saadia will continue to hold the additional charge until the federal government appoints a regular director.

The notification further stated that Prof Abdullah had been serving as SZIC director since March 2023, and copies of the order have been forwarded to relevant university authorities for necessary action.

Commenting on the issue, the PU vice chancellor termed illegal tree cutting an unforgivable crime and warned that no leniency would be shown to those involved. He emphasized that protecting the university’s green spaces and ensuring strict compliance with environmental laws remain top priorities of the administration.
