NAB Denies Media Reports of Inquiry Into Sukkur, Guddu Barrage Projects

The National Accountability Bureau has issued a clarification denying reports that it has launched an inquiry into the Sukkur and Guddu Barrage rehabilitation projects.

In a statement released, NAB said no formal inquiry or investigation has been initiated into alleged financial irregularities in the two projects.

The bureau confirmed that a complaint was received, but clarified that the matter has not progressed beyond the preliminary stage. In line with standard operating procedures, the complaint has been forwarded to the Accountability Facilitation Cell at the Sindh chief secretary’s office for further necessary action.

NAB Sukkur said that media reports circulated on January 28, suggesting an active inquiry, were based on misinformation and did not reflect the bureau’s current involvement in the matter.

The bureau said it would keep the public informed of any future developments in accordance with the law and its transparency protocols.

Earlier this week, some media reports claimed that NAB had directed the Project Management Office of the World Bank-funded Sindh Barrages Improvement Project to submit detailed installation and financial records related to Sukkur Barrage gates numbered 44 to 59, and had summoned officials by January 26.

The Project Management Office operates under the Sindh Irrigation Department and is responsible for the execution and supervision of rehabilitation and modernization works at the Guddu and Sukkur barrages under the SBIP.

The World Bank finances the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project and focuses on strengthening water infrastructure, improving flood resilience, and modernizing key irrigation assets in the province. The World Bank has previously described implementation progress on the project as satisfactory.
