Authorities have agreed to relocate public transport bus stands, truck terminals, and warehouses currently operating along major city corridors to the Rawalpindi Ring Road to reduce severe traffic congestion.
The decision covers major transport hubs, including Faizabad, Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, Peshawar Road, and Chungi No 26. The Rawalpindi Ring Road project is expected to be completed in March, and officials aim to shift transport activity out of densely populated areas before it becomes fully operational.
Under the plan, more than 750 acres of land will be acquired to establish new transport and logistics zones along the Ring Road. Passengers traveling to other cities will access the new terminals through smaller feeder vehicles, while goods transport serving Ganj Mandi will be restricted to designated truck terminals on the Ring Road.
Currently, heavy public and goods transport from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir enters Rawalpindi through the motorway and GT Road, creating heavy congestion and damaging inner-city roads. Officials said relocating transport facilities will significantly ease traffic pressure in the city and cantonment areas.
The decision was finalized with consensus from the Rawalpindi Development Authority, Regional Transport Authority, traffic police, Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, and other stakeholders.
