Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan announced on Tuesday that construction of the long-awaited Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) is scheduled to officially start in May 2026.
Speaking at a high-level National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting, the minister emphasized that the project is a top priority and instructed officials to take immediate action to ensure its smooth execution without delays.
Abdul Aleem Khan stated that both the Sukkur-Hyderabad and Karachi motorways will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aiming for efficient and sustainable completion. He stressed that work on all sections should proceed simultaneously to meet the planned deadlines.
In addition, the minister revealed that the Sialkot-Kharian Motorway (M-12) will now be constructed as a six-lane highway, instead of the initially planned four lanes, to accommodate anticipated future traffic growth.
“The current government is not just building for today, but creating infrastructure that will serve Pakistan for the next 30 years,” he said, highlighting the long-term vision behind these motorway projects.
The meeting also discussed strategies to enhance connectivity and regional utility. Plans were outlined to link the motorway network with Kartarpur and other religious tourism destinations to boost economic activity. To promote Sikh religious tourism, the Ministry of Communications will organise dedicated roadshows in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
The session concluded with briefings from the NHA chairman and senior officials on the feasibility of the Hyderabad-Karachi Motorway and proposals to modernize Right of Way advertising policies along the motorway corridors.
