New Deadline Announced for Karachi’s Major Water Project

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the K-IV water supply project and directed authorities to speed up work, calling the scheme essential to address Karachi’s long-standing water shortage.

During a visit to the project site near Thatta, the minister reviewed ongoing construction and said the federal government was committed to completing the project within the revised timeline.

The K-IV project aims to supply 260 million gallons per day of water to Karachi. Officials informed the minister that the project cost has increased from the original Rs. 120 billion to Rs. 170 billion due to design revisions and inflation.

Ahsan Iqbal said the federal government would cover the full revised cost. He described Karachi as the country’s economic hub and said meeting its basic infrastructure needs remains a top priority. He added that he visited the site on the prime minister’s directions.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the Water and Power Development Authority and instructed officials to accelerate construction to ensure timely completion.

Under the project plan, Wapda will manage bulk water transmission and canal lining to reduce losses, while the Sindh government will oversee the internal distribution network within Karachi.
