University in KP Expels Students for Singing Indian National Anthem

The administration of Bacha Khan University has expelled four students following a controversial performance during a campus event that drew widespread criticism.

Officials said the incident took place at the university’s annual two-day festival, where a group of pharmacy students sang the national anthem of India and chanted related slogans. Videos of the performance were recorded and later circulated on social media, triggering outrage among viewers and student groups across Pakistan.

The viral clips prompted protests and calls for disciplinary action. Several student organizations condemned the act, describing it as inappropriate and demanding strict measures against those involved. Demonstrations were also held on campus expressing support for national solidarity.

One of the students, identified as Jibran Riaz, released a video statement claiming the performance was meant purely for entertainment. He argued that it was no different from students performing or listening to foreign music at university functions and insisted the group held no political sympathies or affiliations.

Despite the explanation, the university’s disciplinary committee reviewed the matter during its 73rd meeting and recommended expulsion. Acting on those recommendations, the administration dismissed the four students, all of whom were enrolled in the Faculty of Pharmacy.

In its official statement, the university said the performance within campus premises risked creating unrest and harming national cohesion, especially after the footage was shared online. The expelled students’ hostel allotments were also cancelled, and they were directed to vacate their accommodation immediately.
