Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced that construction work on the Munawar Chowrangi Underpass has been completed and the facility will be opened to the public on Sunday.
In a statement shared on X, the mayor said beautification work and tiling of the underpass’s side walls will continue even after it is opened for traffic.
He added that construction of the slip roads and service lanes will also begin after the underpass becomes operational. The Munawar Chowrangi Underpass is part of a Rs. 2.02 billion infrastructure project launched in 2023 to ease traffic congestion in one of Karachi’s busiest areas.
The announcement comes months after Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed the Karachi mayor in February to complete both the Munawar Chowrangi and Karimabad underpasses within one month and open them to the public.
The chief minister had issued the directive after reviewing the progress of the delayed projects. The Karimabad Underpass, launched in May 2023, was originally scheduled for completion within 10 months and was expected to open in October 2024. However, technical challenges delayed the project, causing prolonged inconvenience for commuters and local businesses.
