The free public WiFi project in Islamabad has been delayed, as the plan remains incomplete more than one and a half months after its official deadline passed.
Authorities had set December 30, 2025, as the completion date for the initiative. The task of installing 30 WiFi hotspots across the city was assigned to the National Telecommunication Corporation.
However, despite the announcement to turn Islamabad into a free WiFi city, the project has not yet been finalized.
While the specific locations for the WiFi hotspots have yet to be revealed, it is evident that they will be installed in bustling areas to maximize public access to Internet services. This placement should help meet the needs of those seeking connectivity.
According to sources, WiFi hotspots are to be installed at metro bus stations, markets, and other public locations. The delay has affected wider plans to transform Islamabad into a smart city.
This feature should come in handy for users without cellular internet, as it ensures they have seamless access to the internet and the ability to recharge their data packages effortlessly while on the move. It should especially be helpful in areas with poor internet and data coverage.
Officials from the National Telecommunication Corporation told Samaa that the free WiFi service in Islamabad will become operational soon. They stated that network installation and core infrastructure work have already been completed.
