Universities to Add New Subject to All Degree Programs

The Higher Education Commission has directed all public and private universities to introduce a mandatory three credit hour course on Artificial Intelligence in every undergraduate and postgraduate degree program.

In its advisory, the commission stated that Artificial Intelligence now plays a central role in education, healthcare, the economy and governance. It said universities must equip students with a foundational understanding of AI, including its ethical dimensions, data privacy, transparency and societal impact.

The commission allowed universities to offer the course as an elective, an interdisciplinary module or an allied subject within the existing program structure.

It instructed institutions to cover core AI concepts, cross disciplinary applications and key ethical issues such as fairness and accountability, while permitting them to adapt the content to specific academic programs.

The commission said universities will implement the requirement from the Fall 2026 academic session.
