The Punjab government has clarified speculation around another Basant celebration this year, making it clear that the festival will not be held again before its next scheduled edition.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that Basant will now be celebrated in February 2027, ruling out any possibility of an earlier event. In a video message shared through the Punjab government’s official X account, she said there was no proposal under consideration to organize Basant before that time.
The minister acknowledged that kite-flying activities were reported in a few cities over the past several days. However, she said the government chose not to respond harshly, as no injuries or losses were reported during those celebrations.
Bokhari said the strong public response showed people’s deep enthusiasm for Basant, adding that she personally shared that excitement. She reiterated that the next official festival would be held in February 2027 and promised it would be larger and better than this year’s event.
Earlier this month, the Punjab government officially revived Basant in Lahore after an 18-year ban, allowing the festival to take place from February 6 to 8 under strict safety regulations.
Following the event, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the administration and law enforcement agencies for ensuring a safe Basant. She noted that the festival passed without a single death caused by injuries from kite strings, calling it a major success.
With the government now setting a clear timeline, officials say preparations for the next Basant will focus on making it safer, more organized, and more inclusive when it returns in 2027.
