PHF Lifts Ban on National Hockey Team Captain

Federal Secretary for Inter-Provincial Coordination and Ad-Hoc President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani has announced the immediate lifting of the two-year ban imposed on national hockey team captain Imad Shakeel Butt.

The ban had been imposed by former PHF President Tariq Bugti shortly before he resigned from his position amid allegations of mistreatment of players during the Australia tour. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who serves as the federation’s patron-in-chief, accepted Bugti’s resignation.

Following a government decision, Wani was appointed as the ad hoc president of the PHF.

After assuming charge, Wani said immediate short-term steps would be taken to address urgent issues facing the federation. He noted that very little time remains before the World Cup qualifying round, making swift action necessary. A training camp is expected to begin today or tomorrow.

Wani said efforts are already underway to revive hockey in the country, restore confidence within the organization, and reorganize the team management structure.

He emphasized that players should focus solely on training and matches, while the federation will handle all administrative matters. All decisions, he added, will be made on the basis of transparency and merit.

He further stated that all relevant institutions are united in their efforts to bring Pakistan’s national sport back to prominence.

Planned reforms include improving coaching and training systems, strengthening institutional coordination, enhancing governance, ensuring the transparent use of resources, and building partnerships with the private sector to provide better facilities for players.

Wani also announced plans to hold transparent and democratic elections within the federation to elect new leadership. He said his priority as ad hoc president is to stabilize the organization, address immediate challenges, and develop a comprehensive long-term vision for the future of Pakistan hockey.
