The Government of Punjab has approved a Rs3 billion plan to combat smog and air pollution by purchasing 30 modern fog cannon systems to be mounted on electric trucks.
The equipment will be deployed in major urban and industrial areas to help reduce dust and harmful airborne particles.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s comprehensive Clean Air and Climate Resilient Strategy aimed at reducing air pollution and strengthening environmental protection measures.
Officials said the advanced fog cannon project will play a significant role in pollution-affected cities by lowering the concentration of hazardous particles in the air.
Lahore Air Improvement Framework
Under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework, Rs2.25 billion has been allocated for an integrated clean air program in Lahore.
- For the first time, a Super Station System will enable real-time identification of pollution sources in the city.
- A “One City, One Policy” model will introduce modern air quality governance mechanisms.
Advanced Monitoring and Digital Systems
More than 50 modern air quality monitors have already been installed across Punjab, along with the introduction of an automated quality assurance system to ensure data transparency and accuracy.
To control industrial emissions, a digital environmental monitoring system is also being activated.
In addition, approval has been granted for:
- Upgrading environmental laboratories
- Installing modern equipment
- Establishing specialized forensic facilities for emissions analysis
An Environment and Climate Delivery Unit will be set up to oversee the effective implementation of projects through a digital dashboard for performance monitoring.
Officials stated that these measures will not only help reduce smog but also contribute to protecting public health and ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
