Telecom operators have rejected reports claiming that a government-installed firewall had been shut down, terming the assertions baseless and inaccurate.
The reports, which circulated on social media and were picked up by sections of the media, suggested that the government had disabled a firewall system allegedly used to monitor online platforms after it failed to deliver the desired results.
However, when contacted, telecom operators said they had received no directives from the government to disable any such system. They confirmed that the firewall infrastructure on their networks remains operational.
Officials at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority also clarified that the regulator does not operate any firewall. Instead, they pointed to the longstanding Web Management System, which has been in place for around two decades to curb grey traffic and block unlawful online content.
According to PTA officials, the Web Management System continues to function as part of routine regulatory measures and has not been shut down.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has neither officially confirmed nor denied the circulating reports. However, sources familiar with the matter stated that the firewall infrastructure was installed at the operators’ end, and therefore, their position regarding its operational status should be considered authoritative.
The development comes amid heightened public scrutiny over internet governance and content regulation. Despite speculation about changes to digital monitoring mechanisms, both telecom operators and regulatory authorities maintain that no shutdown of any government-installed firewall has taken place.
