Hyderabad Water Workers Threaten to Suspend Services Over Unpaid Salaries

The Mehran Workers Union of the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation has warned that it will suspend the city’s water supply and drainage services from the 20th of Ramadan if pending salaries and pensions are not released.

Union leaders said such a move could leave residents without water ahead of Eid al-Fitr, while sewerage lines may overflow across the city.

Union General Secretary Mujtaba Aslam Abbasi, along with other office-bearers, stated that employees have not been paid salaries or pensions for 17 months.

With Ramadan underway and Eid approaching, they said only about 20 working days remain before the festival, yet neither the corporation’s management nor the mayor of Hyderabad has taken concrete steps to resolve the issue.

The union recalled that Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah had assured them during a recent visit to Hyderabad that the matter would be addressed soon. However, they said no progress has been made.

They also highlighted the plight of widows of deceased employees, who have been without pensions for 17 months and continue visiting offices with their orphaned children in search of relief.

According to the union, workers’ families are facing severe financial hardship, with many struggling to afford necessities.
