Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday said the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project may take up to one and a half years to complete due to ongoing challenges.
Speaking to the media, he said the government has directed authorities to complete the project’s side roads before Eid and is working to clear the University Road corridor as soon as possible. He added that construction work on University Road and Jinnah Avenue will finish within two to three months.
Sharjeel Memon acknowledged that multiple issues slowed progress on the Red Line project and said the situation had reached a point where the scheme risked suspension. However, he stated that the Sindh government decided to continue and complete the project.
He said large scale development work is underway across Karachi and that the government is addressing obstacles affecting the city.
The minister also announced that work on Shahrah-e-Bhutto linking to the M-9 motorway will begin by the end of March or early April.
Commenting on transport imports, he said customs authorities have held new buses for two months. He alleged that customs charged Punjab one percent duty while demanding 17 to 18 percent from Sindh. He added that the provincial government has written to the Federal Board of Revenue seeking uniform treatment.
