The University of Karachi (KU) held a meeting of its Academic Council on Tuesday at the Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium, where members took up key curriculum and academic matters, including new guidance from the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The session was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, and one of the central agenda items was the HEC’s direction to introduce a mandatory three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) across all degree programmes.
Council members were briefed that KU is expected to bring the proposed AI course into effect from the academic session of 2027.
To review the HEC directive and propose an implementation roadmap, the Academic Council formed a six-member committee. The committee will be led by Prof. Dr. Sadiq Ali Khan, with Prof. Nasir Iqbal, Prof. Dr. Najeeb Alam, Dr. Amena Zehra, Prof. Rumana Zaheer, and Prof. Naima Saeed serving as members.
The committee will submit its recommendations in the next Academic Council meeting for approval.
In addition to curriculum discussions, the council also approved a request submitted by the principal of the Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan Government College of Home Economics regarding the institution’s degree titles.
