The Studio Under Yakuza’s Creator Will Stop Receiving Funding Soon

Nagoshi Studio, founded by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, will stop receiving funding from NetEase in May, as reported by Bloomberg. This puts the studio’s first title, Gang of Dragon, in uncertainty.

The report cited confirmation from studio employees and a NetEase spokesperson.

$44.4 Million Project Costs

Bloomberg reported that NetEase chose to withdraw support after learning that Nagoshi Studio required $44.4 million to complete development of the game. Created in 2021, the studio is now seeking alternative funding sources, but has not secured new sponsors so far.

The report added that Nagoshi Studio could continue development independently. However, it would need to cover any associated costs payable to NetEase to retain the brand or related assets.

About Gang of Dragon

While development reportedly began around the studio’s formation, the public first saw Gang of Dragon during a trailer reveal at The Game Awards 2025. The action-adventure game is set in Tokyo and stars South Korean actor Ma Dong-Seok, known for roles in Train to Busan and Marvel’s Eternals.

The situation raises the possibility that Nagoshi Studio could join other projects affected by NetEase’s executive decisions. Bloomberg referenced the company’s 2024 shutdown of Ouka Studio as a previous example.
