Ubisoft has officially confirmed the long-rumored remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, one of the most popular entries in the series. The announcement came through an email to the press outlining the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, positioned alongside brief mentions of a future co-op Assassin’s Creed title and the upcoming Netflix series.
In the statement, Ubisoft referenced the franchise’s well-known phrase: “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted,” before suggesting that recent rumors carried some truth. The publisher encouraged fans to “keep your spyglass on the horizon.”
The remake is titled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. One notable change in the remake’s branding is the removal of the “4” from the title. Ubisoft has not explained the decision. The move may be intended to simplify marketing or signal a broader direction for the Black Flag name within the franchise.
Artwork shared with the announcement shows pirate assassin Edward Kenway standing atop the mast of his ship, the Jackdaw.
A Return to a Fan Favorite
The original Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was the sixth main entry in the series. Its selection as the first remake is notable, but it remains one of the most popular installments in the franchise.
Released after Assassin’s Creed: Revelations in 2011 and Assassin’s Creed III in 2012, Black Flag was widely viewed as a return to form. The game combined stealth-based combat with expansive open-world naval exploration. While it shifted away from dense urban settings toward smaller settlements and jungle environments, its sailing mechanics and ship combat were considered standout features.
Ubisoft has previously demonstrated continued interest in the pirate-themed entry. Jean Guesdon, who directed the original Black Flag, was recently appointed to replace Clint Hocking as director of the next mainline Assassin’s Creed project, currently known as Project Hexe.
Further details about Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced have not yet been announced.
