Microsoft plans to introduce a new Xbox-style gaming interface for Windows 11 PCs starting next month. The feature, called the “Xbox full screen experience,” will allow computers and tablets running Windows 11 to operate more like a video game console, similar to Steam’s Big Picture Mode.
The interface is already available on Windows 11 gaming handheld devices such as the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.
Controller-Friendly Gaming
The Xbox full-screen experience was originally designed for portable gaming devices. However, Microsoft now sees it as a convenient way for players to interact with Windows PCs using a controller.
Ian LeGrow, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Windows and Devices, said in a blog post that the mode allows players to enter a streamlined, full-screen gaming environment whenever they want to relax and play.
How the Mode Works
Microsoft first released the Xbox full-screen experience to beta testers through the Windows Insiders program in November.
After installing the update, users can press the Windows key + G to open the Game Bar overlay, navigate to Settings, and enable the “Enter full screen experience” option. The feature can also be activated with the Windows key + F11 shortcut.
Once enabled, the Windows desktop switches to an Xbox-style home screen. The interface displays Xbox Game Pass titles as well as PC games from other platforms, such as Valve’s Steam store.
Users can navigate through games and apps using a controller, launch titles, and switch between multiple running games.
Microsoft said users can exit the gaming interface without restarting their system. They can return to the desktop through the Task View menu, disable the mode from Game Bar settings, or press the Windows key.
The Xbox full-screen experience will initially launch in select markets.
