Pakistan Issues Dengue Alert Ahead of Monsoon Season

The National Institute of Health Pakistan (NIH) has issued an early dengue alert across Pakistan amid concerns about the possible spread of the virus before the upcoming monsoon season.

In its advisory, the health body provided detailed guidelines on dengue symptoms, treatment, and prevention. Federal and provincial health departments have been directed to take immediate preventive measures and ensure effective surveillance ahead of the rainy season.

According to the NIH, more than 78,000 dengue cases have been reported across the country over the past three years, with infections typically rising during the monsoon period.

High-Risk Areas Identified

The advisory identified schools, hospitals, under-construction buildings, and tyre shops as major dengue “hotspots” and urged authorities to intensify monitoring and preventive action in these areas.

Health officials stressed the need to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, while indoor spraying and fogging must be carried out immediately once a dengue case is confirmed.

Preparedness Measures

Authorities have also been instructed to establish dengue isolation wards in designated hospitals and maintain daily data records of patients.

The NIH emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns and community participation to help control the spread of the virus.

Officials added that in case of a dengue outbreak, the institute will provide technical assistance to federal and provincial health departments to ensure strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
