Late March Rains to Impact Wheat Crop Across Punjab

Rainfall expected in the last week of March is likely to have a mixed impact on wheat crops across Punjab, with benefits for yield but risks of damage in some areas.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a fresh weather system will bring rain, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms to key wheat-growing districts, particularly in South Punjab, from March 24 to March 30.

The spell is expected to lower temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, easing heat stress during a critical crop stage.

Experts say moderate rainfall at this stage can support grain filling, improve yields and reduce farmers’ reliance on irrigation, lowering costs amid high diesel prices. However, strong winds may cause lodging in mature crops, while excessive rain could delay harvesting.

There are also concerns about increased humidity, which may lead to pest attacks and diseases such as yellow rust, aphids and pink stem borer, potentially affecting yields if not managed in time.

Agriculture officials have advised farmers to closely monitor their fields, use resistant wheat varieties and apply fungicides promptly if disease symptoms appear, as timely intervention will be key to protecting the crop.
