Sony Falls to Global Pressures, PlayStation 5 Prices Increased by Up to $150

Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to increase prices for its PlayStation 5 lineup starting April 2, 2026.

The hike affects all console variants, with the PS5 Pro seeing the biggest increase of up to $150 (+Rs. 42,000).

The move comes amid rising hardware costs, including memory components and semiconductors, along with other global economic pressures gauged in the past month.

Note: Prices shown below are calculated at USD 1 = PKR 280. PS5 Digital Edition has risen by Rs. 112,000 (~$400) since its original launch price of $399.99 (Rs. 111,997). Prices could vary once taxes and customs are factored in, particularly in the Pakistani market.

PS5 Variant Old Price (USD) New Price (USD) Old Price/PKR (excluding sales tax, import duties, regulatory fees, etc.) New Price/PKR (excluding sales tax, import duties, regulatory fees, etc.) Increase (PKR)
PlayStation 5 (Disc Edition) $549.99 $649.99 Rs. 153,997 Rs. 181,997 Rs. 28,000
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition $499.99 $599.99 Rs. 139,997 Rs. 167,997 Rs. 28,000
PlayStation 5 Pro $749.99 $899.99 Rs. 209,997 Rs. 251,997 Rs. 42,000

Why Prices Are Rising

Sony explained that the continued global economic pressures forced the company to raise rates. Other reasons included:

  • Rising costs for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and RAM
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Increased logistics and raw material costs
  • Geopolitical tensions and tariffs affecting tech imports

This marks the second big price increase for the PS5 in under a year. The standard PS5 disc edition has now increased by Rs. 70,000 (~$250) since the August 2025 adjustment.

Impact on Gamers

  • Higher prices may reduce impulse purchases, especially among younger or budget-conscious buyers.
  • Retailers are expecting a rush before the April 2 deadline, potentially tightening stock.
  • The PS5 Pro will likely cost over Rs. 250,000 (excluding sales tax, import duties, regulatory fees)

Industry Outlook

Sony is currently the first major console manufacturer to announce hardware price increases in 2026. Microsoft has not revealed similar adjustments for its Xbox lineup, though inflation in the US could pressure competitors to reconsider pricing.

Despite potential backlash, the strategy may help Sony protect hardware margins while expanding subscription services and investing in future platforms, including next-generation PlayStation development later this decade.

What Happens Next

For now, gamers considering a purchase have only a few days left to buy a PS5 at existing prices before the April 2 increase takes effect worldwide.
