Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has inaugurated an Electric Vehicle (EV) taxi project in the province, marking a new addition to the government’s urban transport initiatives.
The launch ceremony included the signing of agreements with Sindh Bank, the Sindh Development Fund, and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority to support the rollout of the project.
Speaking at the event, Memon said the initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly transport, improve urban mobility, and generate employment opportunities for young people in Sindh.
He said the provincial government continues to expand its transport initiatives, including the Pink Bus service and the introduction of electric buses, which he said have received international attention.
Referring to the Pink Bus project, he said it is operated entirely by female drivers and conductors to provide safer travel options for women. He added that the government has also introduced Pink EV scooters to support women’s mobility.
Memon said the EV taxi and related initiatives aim to increase women’s participation in economic activities. He noted that while 150 women initially obtained licences for Pink EV scooters, more than 20,000 applications have since been received, with training being provided to participants.
He also urged industrialists to invest in EV manufacturing in Pakistan, saying the government is prioritizing electric vehicles in procurement and encouraging the establishment of manufacturing facilities, particularly in the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone.
