Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of Sehba Akhtar Road in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, marking the start of a long-delayed infrastructure project in the city.
The project, estimated at Rs. 200 million, covers the rehabilitation of a 1.8-kilometre stretch that was originally built more than two decades ago. The road had deteriorated due to sustained traffic pressure, with conditions worsening in recent months amid ongoing work on University Road.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has initiated full reconstruction of the road, including upgrades to the sewerage system to address drainage issues.
Speaking at the ceremony, Wahab said the project was taken up on a priority basis due to difficulties faced by commuters. He said the road serves as a key route for residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and surrounding areas, including Block 13-D, Gulshan Chowrangi, Hassan Square, and Sir Shah Suleman Road.
Officials said the reconstructed road will have a width of 44 to 46 feet to accommodate increasing traffic volumes. They added that the inclusion of sewerage improvements is expected to enhance durability and improve conditions for residents.
Wahab said the project is part of a broader effort to upgrade Karachi’s infrastructure. He added that several major roads, including Sir Shah Suleman Road and Rashid Minhas Road, as well as routes connecting Drigh Road to Nagan Chowrangi, are also under consideration for development or rehabilitation.
