YouTube now allows creators to generate AI-based versions of themselves for use in Shorts. According to the platform, these avatars can be used to create videos that look and sound like the creator in a controlled and secure way.
To access the feature, users must be at least 18 years old and have an active YouTube channel. Eligible users can begin the process through the YouTube app or the YouTube Create app by recording their face and voice using a secure live selfie capture process.
Once the avatar is created, users can generate scenes using prompts. The system also allows creators to insert their AI avatar into existing YouTube Shorts clips, making the output appear more realistic.
Similar tools have already appeared through third-party platforms, where results have shown a high level of visual and audio accuracy. This integration brings comparable functionality directly into YouTube’s ecosystem.
YouTube includes controls for managing the feature. Creators can delete their avatar data and any generated videos if they no longer want to use the tool. There is also a setting that allows users to limit how others can use their avatar in remixed content.
At present, the AI avatar feature is only available for Shorts. However, with further development, it could expand to long-form video content in the future.
