Samsung could be preparing to reintroduce glasses-free 3D displays through a new technology that may appear first on future Galaxy smartphones, including a possible Galaxy S28 Ultra.
The company has been developing a new display approach in partnership with POSTECH, according to research recently published in Nature.
New metasurface lens design
Samsung’s Visual Technology Team described the system as a “metasurface lenticular lens.”
The technology uses nanoscale structures to control how light reaches the viewer’s eyes more precisely than older 3D display systems.
Unlike previous glasses-free 3D attempts that relied on thick lenticular layers, Samsung’s design is much thinner and more compact.
Researchers said the screen can switch between standard 2D mode and glasses-free 3D mode through a simple voltage change. That means no extra hardware would be needed for regular use.
Addresses past viewing angle problems
One of the main weaknesses of earlier glasses-free 3D displays was narrow viewing angles. Users often had to remain in one exact position for the effect to work properly. Samsung claims its updated system offers viewing angles of up to 100 degrees.
That could allow users to move more freely or let multiple people view the screen at once without disrupting the 3D effect.
Thin enough for current OLED devices
The new layer is reportedly around 1.2mm thick. Samsung said it can fit inside existing OLED display stacks without requiring major design changes.
The company has already tested the concept on a small 50 x 50mm OLED prototype panel.
Possible Galaxy S28 or foldable debut
While Samsung has not confirmed a commercial launch timeline, the Galaxy S28 Ultra could be a possible first device for the technology.
The system may also be better suited for book-style foldables, where larger displays could make 3D gaming and video more practical.
Long-term display plans
Samsung’s research also mentioned potential use across phones, tablets, and other products.
That suggests the company may view glasses-free 3D as a broader long-term display strategy rather than a single experimental feature.
