Punjab to Launch Five New Vehicle Number Series

The Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department Punjab will introduce five new vehicle registration number series for cars next month, expanding options for motorists seeking preferred number plates.

The department said vehicle owners will be able to choose numbers from the new series, while premium or “fancy” numbers will be offered through an e-auction system.

The move comes as demand for customized and high-value number plates continues to rise, particularly in major cities where such numbers attract significant interest.

Earlier, in February 2026, the department issued directions to the Punjab Traffic Police not to fine citizens for using privately manufactured number plates, provided they comply with the approved Punjab format.

In a letter dated February 19, the Office of the Director General Excise and Taxation Punjab noted that some motorists were being fined during routine checks for not displaying government-issued plates.

The department clarified that it has discontinued centralized production of number plates and no longer charges for government-manufactured plates. It said citizens are now allowed to obtain number plates from private vendors, as long as they strictly follow the prescribed Punjab-specific format.

  • What is the punjab specific format? Is this also possible to follow in Islamabad? The front of my car has room for a large number plate and the government issued one doesn’t cover it giving a bad look.
