Solar Electricity Now Nearly Equal to Pakistan’s Entire Grid Capacity: Report

Pakistan’s solar electricity system is now nearly equal to the country’s entire grid capacity, according to the Pakistan Electricity Review 2026.

Total distributed solar capacity reached 38 GW by FY2024-25, equivalent to about 93 percent of the country’s utility-scale installed power capacity.

More people are going off-grid or adding solar to their power mix. Households, farms, and businesses are adopting solar systems at scale.

Distributed solar generation is estimated at 51 TWh in FY25, covering nearly 46 percent of total grid electricity sales (111 TWh). The report notes that official energy data significantly underrepresents actual electricity generation and consumption due to large volumes of behind-the-meter and off-grid solar use.

Grid electricity sales have declined from 125 TWh in FY22 to 111 TWh in FY25, but the report clarifies that overall demand has not fallen. It is increasingly being met outside the central grid system.

Net-metering capacity rose to 6.8 GW, while total solar deployment reached nearly 38 GW, much of it outside formal accounting frameworks.

The report concludes that Pakistan’s power landscape is being reshaped by consumers, with solar emerging as a major, parallel electricity system alongside the national grid.

  • No it isnt. Solar hasn’t been widely adopted as much as people want them to bcz of govt expensive policies
