IO Interactive’s 007 First Light continues to show strong early commercial performance after a successful launch and positive critical reception.
The James Bond game sold 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling title in IO Interactive’s history. The game also received strong early review scores, including an OpenCritic rating of 88 and a Metacritic score of 87.
Third-party estimates now place 007 First Light at more than 2.2 million copies sold across platforms through June 2, with estimated gross revenue of about $150 million.
PlayStation 5 accounted for the largest share of sales at about 55%, followed by Steam at 33%. Xbox Series X and Series S made up less than 12% of sales.
The Steam version has also gained traction in China, where players accounted for more than 17% of Steam sales. Lower regional pricing compared with the US and Europe appears to have helped drive that demand.
007 First Light is a narrative action-adventure game developed and published by IO Interactive. It follows a young James Bond as he enters MI6’s training program and works toward becoming the world’s most famous spy.
The game’s early success gives IO Interactive another major win after its Hitman series and shows strong demand for a modern Bond game after years without a major 007 release.
Despite the strong sales, the future of 007 First Light may not be simple. Amazon now owns MGM, the rights holder behind James Bond, but that acquisition came after IO Interactive’s deal for 007 First Light was already in place.
Amazon Gaming general manager Jeff Gattis indicated that future Bond games would likely be handled by MGM and, in theory, Amazon Game Studios. IO Interactive self-published 007 First Light, but future releases may follow a different arrangement.
That creates uncertainty over whether IO Interactive will return for a direct sequel, even though the studio has already proven it can deliver a successful Bond game.
Amazon has also been repositioning its gaming business after earlier struggles and studio closures, which could raise questions among players about how future Bond games will be handled.
However, Amazon could still choose a publishing or partnership model that keeps IO Interactive involved while giving MGM and Amazon more control over the franchise.
For now, 007 First Light has delivered a strong start for IO Interactive, but the next Bond game may depend as much on licensing and ownership decisions as on sales performance.
