The Punjab Government Pensioners Association (PGPA) has rejected the Punjab government’s decision to increase pensions by only 3.5 percent, calling the raise inadequate and discriminatory compared to relief provided by the federal government and other provinces.
In a statement issued on Friday, PGPA leaders Yawar Mehdi and Mian Khalid Habib urged the President, Prime Minister, Punjab chief minister and other authorities to review recent pension-related measures and introduce fair policies for pensioners.
The association demanded the formation of a high-level committee comprising government officials and pensioners’ representatives to address pension-related issues and propose sustainable solutions.
PGPA leaders said Punjab pensioners were facing severe financial difficulties due to rising inflation, healthcare expenses, utility bills and housing costs. They argued that pensioners in Punjab should receive relief comparable to that granted by the federal government and other provinces.
The association noted that many retired BPS-17 employees receive pensions of around Rs50,000 per month, making it difficult to meet basic living expenses, particularly for families supporting elderly, disabled or chronically ill dependents.
PGPA Chairman Riaz Chaudhry said pension was a legally earned entitlement and not a government favor. The association also called for improved healthcare and medical facilities for pensioners and their families.
