Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) a compulsory subject for primary school students.
The Punjab Education Department has approved the inclusion of AI in the curriculum for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The new subject will be implemented from the 2027-28 academic session.
Under the new curriculum, AI will be taught as a standalone and compulsory subject, with a dedicated class period similar to other core subjects. It will also be included in the formal examination system, meaning students will be required to pass the AI paper like other subjects.
Education authorities said the initiative aims to familiarise children with modern technology from an early age while strengthening their creative, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Officials believe that introducing AI at the primary level will help improve students’ learning speed and overall intellectual development.
The final approval for the primary-level AI curriculum is expected to be granted during a meeting of the Board of Governors of Punjab Information Technology Academy Council (PITAC).
