The Rawalpindi Ring Road is expected to open to traffic in July after the completion of the Rs. 47 billion project, with authorities putting the finishing touches on one of Punjab’s largest road infrastructure schemes.
According to project officials, construction work is in its final phase, with landscaping, lane markings, fencing, drainage, signboards and road lighting being completed before the project is handed over to the Punjab government for inauguration.
Officials said the new 38.3 kilometer highway will have a maximum speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. More than 30,000 vehicles are expected to use the road daily, while a toll collection system similar to the Lahore Ring Road will also be introduced.
The Ring Road stretches from Baanth on G.T. Road to Thalian near the Motorway and includes five interchanges at Baanth, Maira Mohra, Khasala, Kolian Parr and Thalian.
Authorities estimate the project will divert 25 to 30 percent of general traffic and around 70 percent of goods transport from existing roads, helping reduce congestion in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. An industrial zone is also planned along the corridor, while work on the Thalian interchange is expected to begin after the Ring Road is completed.
