Karachi residents may soon face another increase in water tanker charges as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has formed a committee to review existing tanker tariffs amid rising diesel prices.
Officials said the committee will assess current fuel and transportation costs and recommend revised rates before the next round of hydrant contracts is awarded.
The move comes at a time when many Karachiites already pay far above officially notified rates to secure water for daily use.
Hydrants Cell In-charge and Superintending Engineer Ayaz Tunio confirmed the development and said the previously approved rates no longer match current diesel prices.
He added that tanker operators are unwilling to continue supply under the existing tariff structure because it has become commercially unviable.
Under current rates, a 1,000-gallon General Public Supply tanker costs Rs1,560, while a commercial tanker of the same capacity costs Rs3,120.
A 2,000-gallon GPS tanker is priced at Rs2,184, a 3,000-gallon tanker at Rs2,808, and a 5,000-gallon tanker at Rs3,900. Additional transportation charges apply for deliveries beyond a 10-kilometre radius.
Officials indicated that tanker charges could rise significantly once the review is complete.
Meanwhile, another major issue has surfaced as hydrant contractors claim that KWSC owes them more than Rs4.14 billion in unpaid service charges under the DC quota scheme for water supplied to low-income neighbourhoods on official instructions.
The expected tariff revision could add further pressure on millions of Karachi residents who rely on private water tankers in the absence of regular water supply.
