Sony will stop producing physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028.
After the change takes effect, new PlayStation games will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.
Existing Games Unaffected
The decision will not affect games that have already launched on physical discs.
Games scheduled to receive disc releases before January 2028 will also remain unaffected. The change will only apply to new games released after the deadline.
Sony said consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry have continued moving away from physical discs and towards digital media.
The company described the transition as a response to the way most PlayStation users now prefer to purchase and access games.
Future Access
Sony said the move will allow it to focus its resources on developing new ways for players to access games.
Players will still be able to choose where they purchase new titles, including the PlayStation Store and retailers, but the games will only be sold in digital formats from January 2028.
Sony said it remains committed to providing its users with a high-quality gaming experience as it completes the transition.
