The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has arrested a dangerous suspect wanted in 47 criminal cases after its Intelligent Transport System (ITS) identified a suspicious vehicle traveling on the M-5 Motorway near Uch Sharif.
According to a Motorway Police spokesperson, the breakthrough was made after the ITS, which uses advanced cameras and automated monitoring technology, detected the suspect’s vehicle in real time. Acting on the alert, Motorway Police officers set up a checkpoint to intercept the vehicle.
Instead of stopping, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee. However, officers pursued the vehicle and successfully arrested the driver after a chase.
The suspect was identified as Arif Hussain, son of Ilahi Bakhsh and a resident of Rajanpur.
During the operation, police recovered 10 solar inverters, two lithium batteries, Rs. 136,000 in cash, a pistol, 10 live rounds of ammunition, fake vehicle number plates, and other stolen items. A Suzuki Mehran allegedly used in the crime was also taken into custody.
Further verification revealed that the arrested suspect had been nominated in 47 serious criminal cases, including robbery and theft.
According to the Motorway Police, preliminary investigations linked the suspect to a Rs. 8.5 million robbery reported in Hasilpur, Bahawalpur. Authorities said the recovered vehicle and stolen property were also connected to the same case.
The suspect, along with the recovered vehicle, weapons, and other seized items, has been handed over to Uch Sharif Police Station and the Crime Control Department (CCD) Bahawalpur for further legal proceedings.
Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said the operation highlights the effectiveness of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in supporting law enforcement through real-time surveillance and vehicle tracking. He added that the successful arrest demonstrates how modern technology, combined with coordinated policing, can help apprehend wanted criminals and recover stolen property.
