Pakistan Launches Rs. 900 Million Expansion of Major International Airport

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a Rs. 900 million expansion and renovation project at Skardu International Airport to improve passenger facilities and support the growing tourism sector in Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the PAA, the project will significantly upgrade the airport’s infrastructure, including a larger terminal building, expanded passenger lounges, additional check-in counters, increased parking capacity, and new cargo facilities to meet rising passenger demand and prepare for future international operations.

As part of the project, the airport’s terminal building will be expanded from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet. The departure lounge capacity will triple from 300 to 900 passengers, while the arrival lounge will be expanded from 80 to 200 passengers.

The number of check-in counters will increase from six to 10, helping reduce waiting times during peak travel periods. Meanwhile, the airport’s parking capacity will also triple, growing from 200 to 600 vehicles.

The project also includes the construction of a modern cargo office block, which is expected to improve cargo handling and support commercial activity in the region.

According to the PAA, the upgraded airport is expected to attract more domestic and international flights, making Skardu more accessible for tourists and further strengthening Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism industry.

PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said construction is currently in its initial phase, with line marking work already underway before major development activities begin.
