Punjab Delays AI Subject in Primary Schools Over Lack of Computer Labs

The decision to formally introduce Artificial Intelligence as a subject in primary schools across Punjab has been delayed because government schools lack the required computer labs.

The Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority had already approved teaching AI to students from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The subject was planned for the upcoming academic year, according to sources.

However, the absence of AI and computer lab facilities in government primary schools has stalled the implementation plan.

Sources said the delay in issuing the official notification may also affect the printing of textbooks. Since the subject has not yet been formally notified, the preparation and printing of AI books remains on hold.

Officials are now considering introducing AI concepts as a chapter within existing subjects at the primary level instead of launching it as a full subject. This proposal is under discussion because setting up dedicated AI labs in thousands of primary schools would cost millions of rupees.

PECTAA officials said matters related to teaching AI in primary schools are still under consideration. They added that a formal notification regarding the AI curriculum will be issued soon after final decisions are made.

The move comes as education authorities try to equip students with modern technology skills while also addressing the infrastructure challenges faced by government schools.
