The federal government has appointed senior diplomat Ali Asad Gilani as Pakistan’s new ambassador to China, replacing Khalil Hashmi, whose three-year tenure in Beijing has come to an end.
According to reports, Gilani will take over one of Pakistan’s most important diplomatic assignments, overseeing bilateral relations with China.
He is currently serving as the Additional Secretary for Asia-Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before this role, he served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Uzbekistan and also held the position of Additional Secretary for West Asia.
Meanwhile, outgoing ambassador Khalil Hashmi is expected to be assigned another key position upon his return to Pakistan, according to sources.
China remains one of Pakistan’s closest strategic and economic partners, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, defense, and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Gilani’s appointment comes as both countries continue to strengthen bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
