HMD Touch AI Brings Nokia Lumia-Like Design for $69

HMD has launched the Touch AI in China, a compact phone that combines a design inspired by Nokia’s Lumia series with artificial intelligence features.

The device is similar to the HMD Touch 4G that debuted in India last October, but the Chinese version adds locally focused AI features powered by ByteDance’s Doubao model.

Design and Display

The HMD Touch AI features a compact 3.2-inch touchscreen.

Its design takes inspiration from older Nokia Lumia phones, including a circular camera housing on the back and a bright cyan finish.

Users can also purchase interchangeable rear covers in yellow, blue, and white.

A programmable physical button is positioned on the top of the phone. Users can configure it for different functions, including one-touch SOS access to quickly alert emergency contacts.

Internals and Software

The phone supports dual-SIM 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi and VoLTE. It can also work as a mobile hotspot for other devices.

The Chinese model comes with ByteDance’s Doubao AI model, which supports Chinese-English translation, study assistance, image recognition and AI image generation.

It can also recognise objects in photos and reorganise information from images.

The phone runs a simplified, closed software environment designed to reduce distractions. It includes parental controls and does not support freely installing third-party applications. Short-video and similar entertainment services are also excluded from the system.

Alipay support is built in for payments.

Cameras

The HMD Touch AI has 2MP cameras on both the front and back.

The rear camera sits inside the Lumia-inspired circular camera module, while the front camera can be used for selfies and other basic camera functions.

Battery and Pricing

The phone packs a 1,950 mAh battery and charges through USB-C.

The HMD Touch AI is available for pre-order in China for approximately $69.
