Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Finally Exceed 5,000mAh Battery After Seven Years

Samsung is reportedly considering its first major battery capacity increase for the Galaxy S27 Ultra after seven years, thanks to pressure from the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s battery upgrade rumors.

While the company has kept its Ultra flagship at a 5,000 mAh battery for several generations, a new rumor suggests Samsung is now testing a larger battery that could finally push the device beyond that limit.

According to information shared by tipsters, Samsung is evaluating a battery with a capacity between 5,600 mAh and 5,800 mAh for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. If testing is successful, the phone could launch with a minimum rated capacity of 5,500 mAh, marking the first time a Galaxy Ultra model has exceeded the 5,000 mAh threshold since the Galaxy S20 Ultra introduced that capacity.

Since Samsung phones are known for their battery optimization, this jump could result in a notable increase in battery life for the Ultra phone.

Pressure from Apple

The reported upgrade comes as Apple is also expected to increase battery capacity on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. With both companies looking to improve battery life in their next flagship smartphones, Samsung could be aiming to remain competitive in an area where Chinese smartphone brands have already made significant advances.

Despite the rumored battery increase, Samsung is reportedly still reluctant to adopt silicon-carbon battery technology, which allows manufacturers to fit larger batteries into the same physical space. According to the leak, the hesitation is mainly due to cost rather than concerns about the technology itself.

Why Not Silicon Carbon?

The report claims that using silicon-carbon batteries for one million Galaxy S27 Ultra units would cost Samsung between $22 million and $28 million, compared to approximately $12 million to $15 million for conventional lithium-ion batteries. With the company also facing a reported DRAM supply shortage, Samsung is said to be avoiding additional manufacturing costs wherever possible.

Even without switching to silicon-carbon batteries, a larger battery could still help Samsung improve battery life. Combined with further optimizations in One UI, the company could deliver longer endurance while competing more effectively with Apple’s flagship devices.

The leak also suggests that the rumored Galaxy S27 Pro may retain a 5,000 mAh battery, the same capacity expected for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Giving the Ultra model a noticeably larger battery would help differentiate Samsung’s premium flagship from the rest of the lineup.

As with all early leaks, these details should be treated with caution until Samsung officially announces the Galaxy S27 series. However, if the rumors prove accurate, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could finally receive one of the most requested hardware upgrades in the lineup.
