Asia Cup Matches Get ODI Status from ICC

Asia Cup is set to start in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 15. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has awarded ODI status to all the matches despite the inclusion of an associate nation Hong Kong.

The step is being lauded by the cricketing circles as it boosts the confidence of non-member nations and persuades other teams to fight hard for the ODI status.

Hong Kong Joins Other Countries for Asia Cup

Hong Kong is set to play its games against Pakistan on September 16 and India on September 18 in the league stage.

Hong Kong qualified for the only spot left in the 6-side Asia Cup 2018 by overcoming strong favorites UAE in the qualifying round.

ICC Grants ODI Status to Asia Cup Matches

There has been a confusion among the cricket fans surrounding the status of one day matches played between non-members and full-members of the ICC, therefore, cricket’s regulatory body has granted ODI status to all the matches.

ICC is also thinking about solving the debate regarding award of ODI status to matches within the next month, says ICC Chief Executive David Richardson.

The fact that these events are open to teams beyond the existing 16 teams that currently have ODI status is important and, accordingly, ensuring all matches are granted ODI status is befitting of the events and just reward for the teams that have qualified.

Hong Kong has joined full member nations including Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup and would hope to give their best performance in the field.
