Following are some tips on how to groom your beard at home.

Keep the Beard Soft and Clean

A clean and soft beard is a whole lot easier to trim. So, to keep your beard clean and soft, you need to wash it with beard shampoo or any soap by applying them along your jawline, to clean your beard. After that, use a moisturizing conditioner to soften up your beard.

Brush your Beard

After conditioning your beard, take a brush and run it against the grain so the facial hair stand up and out. This way you can find all the inconsistencies in your beard which will help you in trimming your beard.

Trimming your Beard

In order to trim your beard, you need clippers to trim it to your preferred length. If you’re looking for something simple and short, then trimming the beard all around in equal length is fine.

Tip: Always start with a bigger clip number, to avoid cutting the beard too short.

If you want to give your beard some shape, then you have to use different clip numbers on different areas of your beard. For example, if you are using number 3 on the cheeks and temple area, then switching the clip number to 4 or 5 around the goatee area will give a flattering look to your beard.

Trimming your Moustache

Once you’re done with your beard, it’s time to trim your moustache. The moustache should be kept as short as the hair around the cheeks and temple area. Use the clipper width-wise on the moustache so that the guard doesn’t reach the nostrils. To groom your moustache, you need to use scissors to clear facial hairs from the upper lip. Some people prefer clear upper lip and some prefer overhang. So, it is entirely up to you.

How long you want your beard to be, is also your call. It is the trickiest part of trimming the beard. If you are aiming for the u-shape, anything below Adam’s apple should be trimmed off. Some people have long necks so the good reference point is anything just above the Adam apples should be the place to stop.
