Alia Bhatt is a Fan of Sanam Saeed
For the characterization of the 25-year-old’s character, Alia has been watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Umrao Jaan, and Mughal-E-Azam.Â
It was actually Kalank director Abhishek Varman who told Alia to watch the hit Pakistani drama starring Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed. In an interesting twist, Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt have even starred together in Kapoor & Sons.Â
The Gully Boy actress revealed that her character’s sense of resilience and diligence will come from what she learned from Kashaf.
“Abhishek asked me to watch ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’. The character of the girl (Kashaf played by Sanam Saeed) in the show is very much how Roop will deal with the situation. She has responsibility on her shoulders so she is not always a happy person. She is vulnerable yet strong. It is difficult (to bring so many) layers – unhappy, vulnerable and strong to a character. Abhishek kept saying that I should be irritating.”
Period drama Kalank will have Alia Bhatt speak Urdu rather than the usual Hindi.
I watched a lot of old films like ‘Mughal-E-Azam‘ and ‘Umrao Jaan‘ to get an understanding of grace and body language. (And) I had to clean my Hindi as I am speaking Urdu (in the film).
Based on Alia, Inspired by Kashaf
Although film-maker Abhishek wants Alia Bhatt’s characterization of Roop to be like Kashaf from Zindagi Gulzar Hai, yet the role was particularly written for Alia Bhatt.
Karan Johar had been prepping for Kalank as far back as his Student of the Year days in 2012.

When film-maker Abhishek took the directorial helm he wrote the role for Roop with Alia in mind.
“I heard it from Abhishek and he said he was adapting the film in his own way. After many months, I realised Abhishek had written this role keeping me in mind. The process of this film coming to me was very organic,”
Her character was described by Sinha as ‘Free, bound only by love‘.
