In case you haven’t heard of YouGov, they’re an online platform which conducts polls on a range of subjects from politics like expected voter outcome in the United States Presidential elections 2020, to what kind of people watch Love Island.
One poll that they conduct annually is their ‘World’s Most Admired‘ list of people, places or anything else. The poll outcome then separates results into the most admired women in the world and most admired men in the world.

This year Michelle Obama topped the list of women, knocking back last year’s list topper Angelina Jolie. Meanwhile, Malala Yousafzai ranked sixth on the list, right behind Queen Elizabeth II and Emma Watson.
How Do These Polls Work?
Before we all get to celebrating Malala Yosafzai being ranked among the top 10 ‘most admired women in the world’. A lot of people must now be wondering how these people are nominated for the polls and who’s voting.
YouGov’s panel selects the sampling for voting from their panel of registered users.
These registered users are a group of 1 billion British adults. How does one country account for a ‘global poll’? We guess they didn’t think that through.
Even from this panel, only an ‘active sample’, meaning a specific group of selected people, are allowed to vote in certain polls and;
“Restrictions are put in place to ensure that only the people contacted are allowed to participate. This means that all the respondents who complete YouGov surveys will have been selected by YouGov,”

This doesn’t sound so transparent or bipartisan so far.
One of the biggest disadvantages of systemic sampling such as active sampling is over- or under-representation of particular patterns and a greater risk of data manipulation.
“Active Sampling ensures that the right people are invited in the right proportions. In combination with our statistical weighting, this ensures that our results are representative of the country as a whole.”
A Win for Malala?
Accuracy and reliability aside, the audience reactions were noteworthy. It was interesting to see that Narendra Modi ranked in sixth place among men. Like Malala Yousafzai ranked sixth on the women’s list. We know its cringe-worthy even comparing the two, but you get the gist.

Plenty of Indians couldn’t even handle a Pakistani woman on the list.
Number 6 @Malala never heard of atrocities in Balochistan, terrorism against Ahmadis, minorities in Pakistan. Just got Nobel peace prize for taking a bullet that landed her in UK with lavish life and hypocrisy! Clearly an agent of @OfficialDGISPR

Pakistanis had her back though.
