If it weren’t unfortunate enough that a biopic of Nobel Peace Laureate Malala Yousafzai did not cast a Pakistani artist for the character, turns out there’s one more reason why the movie isn’t getting promos in Pakistan. Gul Makai, based on the life of Malala Yousafzai, will not be released in Pakistan either.

Gul Makai Gets Its First Trailer [Video]
Indian film Gul Makai is apparently a biopic of the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner. The role of Malala is essayed by Indian actress Reem Sheikh in the film. Indian director Amjad Khan directed the film, while Britain-based Pakistani journalist Shahid Khan co-produced the film.
However, despite being based on a Pakistani public figure, the film will not release in Pakistan. The filmmakers seemed uninterested it here. This is based on the fact that Gul Makai creators have not even submitted the film to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Meanwhile, the film will still be released in India where the director faced the heat from certain pressure groups. Amjad Khan told Entertainment.pk that he had received threats from fundamentalists and some political parties when the film was in the pipeline.
Amjad still asserts that the film is generally being well received in India. Despite having received death threats:
“Such fundamentalist elements exist in every society”

Zindagi Tamasha Gets Delayed as Religious Party Gets To Clear Film for Release
Yet despite brushing off threats and facing opposition for making a biopic on a Pakistani character, its unfortunate that he will not be releasing the film in Pakistan.
This raises the question of whether filmmakers are wary of Pakistani censor boards. Could this have to do with films like Maalik being flagged after hitting theaters? Perhaps the more recent incident of Zindagi Tamasha’s release date being delayed as the film awaits clearance from a politico-religious group might have been discouraging.
It should also be mentioned that Pakistan currently has a ban on Bollywood films in place. Perhaps the filmmakers took their decision based on frayed ties between Pakistan and India?
The movie was shot in India and England. Gul Makai release date is slated for January 31, 2020 in India.
