Even in the midst of a national crisis, some people lack all humanity. One example is that of Gulshir Macchi, a man who lured a flood affectee under the guise of help and raped her. Something Ayesha Omar is highlighting.
A rickshaw driver named Gulshir Macchi lured a young Hindu girl under the pretense of ofeering rations in Shadadpur in Sindh’s Sanghar district. The flood victim was said to have been drugged and held hostage for two days by the culprit who raped her.
Police have arrested the accused and also filed an FIR against him. The affectee is undergoing a series of medical tests in order to obtain a better understanding of the girl’s condition.
Like many others, Ayesha Omar took to Instagram to raise the issue and express anger. In her Instagram story she shared her two cents saying;
“And now, this is happening, … Is there any end to the shamelessness? Just abuse, steal, loot, violate, torture and suppress. On every level. I don’t even know what to feel. Or what to think.”
Raising the question we should all ponder, she asked, what can we do about this.
“How can we change all this? Every day, I sit and ponder over this question. What is it that I as a Pakistani woman can do to change this dark situation?”
With the flash floods leaving millions without shelter, many overlook how women are more at risk to be victims of sexual crimes. Young girls and women have been equally devastated by the floods. As they are forced to live under the open sky and all the debate around whether menstrual hygiene products are essential relief items, we forget how their security is most at risk.
