Hold onto your wands, Potterheads—HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series might just have found its Albus Dumbledore.

According to sources confirmed by Deadline, veteran actor John Lithgow is in final talks to take on the role of the wise and enigmatic headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

While HBO has yet to officially confirm the casting, the network acknowledged the swirling rumors, stating, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

One of the most iconic characters in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe, Dumbledore is a cornerstone of the story. As the powerful yet compassionate headmaster of Hogwarts, he serves as Harry’s mentor in the fight against Voldemort. The character was previously brought to life by Richard Harris in the first two films before Michael Gambon took over following Harris’ passing.

If Lithgow steps into the role, he’ll bring his own gravitas and charm to the character. Known for his versatility, Lithgow has delivered unforgettable performances in everything from the quirky sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun to the chilling Dexter and the regal The Crown.

His recent work in FX’s The Old Man and Focus Features’ Conclave has only solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.

Lithgow isn’t the only big name being floated for the series. Reports suggest that Paapa Essiedu, known for his standout performances in I May Destroy You and The Lazarus Project, is a top contender to play the brooding and complex Severus Snape.

As for the golden trio—Harry, Hermione, and Ron—HBO is reportedly looking to cast fresh faces. Warner Bros. launched an open casting call in late 2024, seeking young actors aged 9 to 11 to bring the beloved characters to life for a new generation of fans.

HBO’s Harry Potter series is being billed as a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s books, promising to dive deeper into the magical world than the original films. The series is planned to span a decade, with each season likely covering one book in the series.

In a statement, HBO teased,

“[The series] will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years.”

However, the network was quick to reassure fans that the original films, which ran from 2001 to 2011, will remain a core part of the franchise and continue to be available globally.

Stay tuned, Potterheads—this is just the beginning.
