In a shocking turn of events, the adopted son of renowned Sindhi poet Dr. Akash Ansari has confessed to his murder, police confirmed on Monday.
The tragic death of the revolutionary poet initially believed to be caused by a house fire, has now been revealed as a deliberate act of violence.
Latif Akash, the foster son of the late poet, admitted to killing Dr. Ansari with a sharp-edged weapon before setting his room ablaze in an attempt to cover up the crime.
Dr. Akash Ansari, 70, was a prominent poet and writer whose work resonated deeply with the people of Sindh. He tragically lost his life in what was initially reported as a house fire in the Citizen Colony area of Qasimabad, Hyderabad.
Rescue teams found his lifeless body in his room, while Latif, his adopted son, was slightly injured and taken to the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital for treatment.
Early reports suggested that the fire might have been caused by a short circuit, as a heater was in use in the room. However, suspicions quickly arose when investigators noticed inconsistencies in the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police revealed that Latif, who struggled with drug addiction, often demanded money from his adopted father. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farrukh Lanjar stated that the murder was premeditated and not an accident.
Latif’s confession came after investigators gathered substantial evidence, including DNA testing and forensic analysis, which are still underway.
Family sources and close friends of Dr. Ansari had already expressed doubts about the nature of his death, suspecting foul play. Their concerns were validated when the autopsy, conducted by Dr. Abdul Hamid Mughal, revealed deep wounds on Dr. Ansari’s body, consistent with injuries inflicted by a sharp object.
Dr. Ansari’s funeral was initially planned to take place in his hometown of Badin. However, police intervened and recalled the family to Hyderabad after suspicions of foul play emerged. The poet’s body was returned to Civil Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination, which ultimately confirmed the violent nature of his death.
